The Office of the Auditor General of the Federal Republic of Somalia (OAGS) has taken a significant step forward in strengthening public sector accountability and transparency by participating in a Coordinated Performance Audit alongside nine other African Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs). The initiative, organized under the African Organization of English-speaking Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E), aims to enhance collaboration, capacity, and the overall quality of public auditing across the continent.
The high-level meeting, held at AFROSAI-E’s headquarters in Pretoria, South Africa, brought together senior officials and directors from the Offices of the Auditor General of the participating countries. During the meeting, participants exchanged valuable insights, best practices, and lessons learned from the audit process, focusing on improving methodologies, strengthening institutional capacity, and promoting greater consistency in performance auditing across member countries.
The Coordinated Performance Audit serves as an important platform for fostering regional cooperation and mutual learning among African SAIs. By sharing expertise and experience, the participating institutions aim to ensure that public funds are managed effectively and efficiently and that governments deliver measurable results for their citizens.
For Somalia, this marks the first-ever participation of the OAGS in a regional coordinated audit—an achievement that underscores the Office’s growing commitment to international standards and collaboration. The results of this audit are expected to be published soon, showcasing the collective efforts and findings of all participating countries.
“This engagement reflects our determination to continuously strengthen the quality and impact of our audits,” said a senior OAGS official, adding that through regional cooperation, the OAGS is not only building its own capacity but also contributing to improving public financial management across Africa.
Participation in this initiative is part of OAGS’s broader strategy to enhance professional competence, institutional capacity, and technical excellence among its audit staff. The Office continues to invest in training, technology, and partnerships that promote accountability, transparency, and integrity in the management of public resources.
Beyond the audit itself, OAGS is reinforcing its commitment to good governance by strengthening relationships with national, regional, and international stakeholders. These partnerships play a vital role in advancing Somalia’s progress toward sustainable public sector reforms and effective service delivery.
As the OAGS continues to align its work with global best practices and AFROSAI-E’s strategic goals, its participation in initiatives such as the Coordinated Performance Audit highlights Somalia’s renewed commitment to transparency, accountability, and oversight in the use of public funds.
