Mogadishu, Somalia, September 29 – October 2, 2025: The Office of the Auditor General of the Federal Republic of Somalia (OAGS), in partnership with the Swedish National Audit Office (Swedish NAO), has concluded a four-day workshop in Nairobi aimed at strengthening the quality and effectiveness of performance audits. The initiative highlights Somalia’s ongoing commitment to accountability, transparency, and good governance.

Held from September 29 to October 2, 2025, the workshop focused on equipping OAGS senior managers and technical staff with the knowledge and tools to better support and supervise audit teams throughout all stages of the audit process. Sessions and facilitated discussions provided insights into audit review, supervision, and organizational capacity building, while also serving as a platform to review progress on ongoing reform initiatives.

“Public accountability is at the core of our mandate” said the Deputy Auditor General Mukhtar Mohamed Abukar, who opened and closed the training. “Strengthening audit quality and oversight not only builds trust in public institutions but also ensures that Somalia’s resources are managed responsibly for the benefit of our citizens”.

The training placed special emphasis on the application of the Performance Audit Quality Review (PAQR) framework and the adoption of international standards, enabling participants to align Somalia’s auditing practices with global benchmarks. Delegates also gained exposure to international best practices while tailoring them to Somalia’s governance realities.

The collaboration between OAGS and the Swedish NAO is part of a long-standing bilateral partnership designed to strengthen Somalia’s Supreme Audit Institution and reinforce its role as a cornerstone of public sector accountability.

This partnership-driven initiative marks another step forward in Somalia’s reform journey. By embedding a culture of transparency and accountability, OAGS continues to play a central role in promoting good governance, fiscal responsibility, and sustainable development.
